House of Reformation for Juvenile Offenders (first) is built.

[1828-TOC] It is located near today’s 800 East Broadway. The second corrections facility in the U.S. to separate youth and adult populations, it moves to a new building (second) nearby in 1836,* to Deer Island (third) in 1858,* to Rainsford Island (fourth) in 1895.* It changes its name to the Suffolk School for Boys in 1906, and closes in 1920. Boys are then sent to the Shirley School for Boys and girls to the Massachusetts Industrial School for Girls in Lancaster.
